Seeking a Model or Two for Bellydance Plus Web Site

Hi there! As some of you may now, I have a second web site, smaller than Shira.net, which is called "Bellydance Plus!" at www.bellydanceplus.com . The purpose of this web site is to provide advice, inspiration, costuming ideas, and tips to plus-sized dancers.

One section of this web site consists of photo galleries showing plus-sized dancers looking fabulous in their belly dance costumes. The purpose of the photo galleries is to provide positive plus-sized role models that would-be belly dance students can look at and say, "Wow, her body type is similar to mine, and if she can look this good, I'll bet I can, too!"

Right now, unfortunately, the photo galleries section lacks ethnic diversity. All of the dancers it currently features are of European descent. I would like to bring some dancers of color into the photo galleries. I have already approached a couple of people that I think are great candidates, and I need to get moving on following up with them. But I'm also interested in finding a couple more people besides the ones I've already been in contact with.

Sooooo....

I'm currently looking for a couple of dancers of color who can meet my criteria to be added to the photo galleries of Bellydance Plus.

Dear dancers of all genres, levels of experience, and walks of life,

My name is Raquel and I am a graduate student of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (Palo Alto, CA), as well as a dancer living on the East Coast. I’ve been dancing since the age of three and have been an active lover of the many forms of Raks Sharqi for over 6 years, and now consider myself to be a Movement Artist(this is due to the integration of my dance and spiritual practice). After my participation in two dance companies (Bellyqueen and Desert Sin), my contact and intimate interaction with the Divine Feminine has led me to a depth of mystery and self discovery, which has given birth to a new perspective on this dance, dance in general, and life/existing/being.

This announcement is being posted because of my ever growing interest in dance as a tool for spiritual growth, human development, and a valid medium for existence and being for those that consider dance to be their life’s blood.

A questionnaire {or a Quest-ionnaire which implies a journey} has been developed based on the essence of the topic idea: Spiritual and Transpersonal Practice of Movement and Dance, and how this is a use for spiritual growth for some, and how it is a driving force of life for others (and my curiosity as to why that is).

The intimate relationship I have developed with ontology and dance is the basis for my thesis project, and this is what motivates me to learn more about the essentials of it.

You are invites to participate in this preliminary questionnaire as part of an ongoing research inquiry.
This questionnaire is to initiate my prospective field of research, stemming from my Master’s study in Transpersonal Psychology into the Doctorate field of study.

There is still much organization and work to be done, as well as integration to tend to. After receiving this preliminary questionnaire from you, I will proceed into a more in-depth series of questions in regards to existence and being through dance and movement, tailored to each dancer that participates.

Goddess bellydancer meet up

Its a work in progress. I'm working on the first BBBD Meet-Up that will hopefully happen next year. I'm a little skinny (skinny lol) on details as of yet as to where it will be but it will happen. This is open for discussion as to what people would like to have in this meet. We will have workshops with some of our big beautiful bellydancer, performances, vending( is very possible still working on that) and a last night banquet send off with free dance.
If you have any request I would love to hear them and i will see what i can do.
Is this something we are ready for? Who would love to join us in a few days of fun and sisterhood. (Male big beautiful bellydancers welcome too.)
P.S. If your willing to teach a workshop let me know. I'm trying to get diffrent workshops togeather in my book.

Live Drum Solo Performance Workshop
Perform a live drum solo with Karim Nagi of Turbo Tabla! Karim will teach the basic principles of improvising to a live drum solo, including entrances, endings, dancer-drummer communication, common rhythms and corresponding movements. Participants will have the opportunity to perform an informal, 2 minute drum solo with Karim at the Sahara Dance Hafla that same evening (no costumes, just party clothes and a hip scarf ;)).

Egyptian Cane Combinations
Raqs Al Assaya, a cheerful dance from the Sa’id (Upper Egypt), the dancer twirls a cane in playful imitation of the men’s regional martial art. (The men’s version, Tahtihb, is performed with heavy staffs.) Raqs Al Assaya may be presented as folkloric dance, or elements of this dance may be adapted for cabaret-style Oriental dance. Elysa will teach basic cane vocabulary, fun combinations and a short Sa’idi choreography. Students need to provide canes for class. A few canes will be available for purchase at the studio.
Prerequisite: Competency with basic cane technique required.

Hip Hop vs. Bellydance?

Hey All (I've already posted this in BBD, but I figure I'll place it here as well to get hopefully as much discussion on this as possible :)

In the past two months, I've heard disparaging comments towards hip hop dance from well known dancers, dancers in my area and dancer posts on tribe. Most of them frame hip hop dance as highly sexual, as lacking moral boundaries and as degrading towards women. However, I've noticed that most of these people (ok, all of them :) are Caucasian. They seem to do it in order to say 'well, people might see bellydance's bedlah as sexual but at least we're not as sexual as all that booty-shaking in hip hop dance.' or to say 'why will parents send their kids to hip hop over bellydance considering how overtly sexual hip hop is.' One poster did call hip hop all that 'booty-shaking.' But, hello, the three-quarter shimmy is all about 'booty-shaking.' When I've pressed the people I know to name hip hop videos where they've seen overtly sexual dancing (or any at all) they usually come up blank and I have to point out that Eve, Usher, Queen Latifa, Lil Mama, Black-Eyed Peas, etc. all belong to the hip hop genre, and the videos they produce are far from derogatory. In fact, I always try to emphasize that hip hop dance is an art form, and just like bellydance it can be misappropriated. I'll also point out that the videos they hear about are from male hip hop artists whose videos only appear 'after hours' and are mainly created to titillate or for sensational purposes. However, it upsets me that dancers who speak out against society's denigrating construction of bellydance as overtly sexual, have to put down another dance form to make themselves seem 'normal' and 'better'. It also concerns me as it covertly reminds me of 19th century mindsets that frame the movements of certain cultures as salacious, rather than looking at who is using them. Has anyone else come across this?

Ravenmoon at the Salon Song in Chicago

I got to see Ravenmoon do a dance demonstation at the Salon Song Women of Colour Reproductive Health Conference in Chicago this past week and the little that I saw was Amazing. I love the way that she spoke with everyone and made everyone feel comfortable. The Amazing part was that the majority of these women of colour did not even know that they dance was theirs. Because it has been hijacked by the stylised Hollywood(ShallowWood) Las Vegas Caberet style dancing. It was a great expericen and I hope to take a circle dance with you one day

I got to see Ahavah dance

There was event this past weekend put on by Jillina to benefit victims of family violence. It was a nice event but the highlight was seeing Ahavah dance. She is very graceful, very subtle in her movements and very relaxed and comfortable with her dance. She was a great pleasure I only wish she had danced another set. Keep it up girl!!!!!!

Viraj and Valizan in newspaper article

Viraj in Edmonton and I got interviewed a few weeks back by a reporter for The Canadian Press, which is THE big newswire service here in Canada. They supply to papers all across Canada. Well... apparently the newspaper in Winnipeg thought we were somewhat newsworthy, though they have changed some of my quotes. Following the link gets the story and a pic of Viraj himself.

And I find it kind of funny that with only 5 male dancers in all of Canada, three of them are men of colour! :)

Men enter hip circles
Break into belly dancing

EDMONTON -- Despite the odd looks, laughter and sometimes outright
hostility, a handful of Canadian men have embraced belly dancing as
their chosen career path, shaking up a gender stereotype that had kept
the art form exclusive to the gyrations of the female hip.

"When I started out I felt like a freak, but I was doing it for fun so
it didn't matter," says Viraj Wanigasekera, 32, who stepped into the
spotlight of male belly dancing eight years ago in Edmonton.

"It's been a long journey of ups and downs with a pattern of barriers
and eventual breakthroughs."

Viraj says he's the only professional male belly dancer between
Vancouver and Toronto, and there are only a half-dozen across Canada.

He began belly dancing after a female friend invited him to a dance
competition. When he was told men could belly dance too, and used to
perform with women hundreds of years ago, he was intrigued.

He now performs regularly at various restaurants and festivals while
teaching his own belly dance and fitness classes -- after years of
training, he says, to seek legitimacy in a female-dominated art form.

It hasn't been a smooth transition to success.

'FINE LINE'

"You walk a fine line as a male dancer, and if you're performing for a
very public venue you better be ready for verbal insults and
derogatory comments," Viraj says with a sigh.

"Men here are valued for the size of their wallets, so you deal with a
lot of those traditional male stereotypes that are extremely narrow
and often restrictive."

Rob Galbraith, who uses the stage name Valizan, says he has
experienced similar hostility in Toronto -- although not to the extent
of Viraj, because metropolitan audiences are more accepting than those
found in smaller centres.

Yet Galbraith admits he has still found himself battling for respect.

"I can train as much as I want and, as an artist, I don't think I get
my due," he says. "Because (audiences) look at me and say, 'It's a guy
that's dancing. Oh my God.' "

"They flip out over the fact that it's a male belly dancing and they
ignore the dancing itself."

While winning over audiences has been one issue, these gender-bending
hip-shakers have also fought for recognition from members of the dance
community.

Denise Enan, who's been teaching belly dancing for 32 years, remembers
seeing a man belly dance for the first time and not knowing what to
think. "I still think it's a very feminine kind of dancing, but lots
of men do it now," she said from her Ottawa dance studio.

Galbraith, who turned to professional belly dancing after he lost his
job as a Toronto journalist, says gaining respect from musicians who
are used to performing with female dancers has been difficult -- but
that's slowly changing.

"They're willing to give you one chance and if you mess it up they
don't give you a second one," he says.

Valizan's YouTube debut

Despite the fact I'm a total Luddite (Go look it up! Here: dictionary.reference.com/browse/Luddite ) i have finally got moving pictures of myself up on YouTube.

This is from The Dark Side show held in Toronto last week. It is a quick and dirty little dose of Tribal dance that gets hosted every three or four months.

I'm dancing to a Bulgarian Gypsy song (Pobjednicki Coçek), so I didn't dress in my usual tribal costumes, I took at stab at seeming Bulgarian.

And no, I'm not sweating profusely, I actually drenched myself in baby oil to make myself a bit more reflective while I dance. I will also warn you that it is rather dark in this clip.

Arabesque Dance Company has put up a new demo reel of traditional Arabic dance that includes a lot of segments from the big show I was part of in November, Asala.

I will admit it, I'm proud of my work in this show.

Networking in Long Beach in February?

Sorry for the cross post, but I'm desperate. I've searched and searched and nothing...nada...zilch! Does anyone know where I can find artwork, posters, photographs, cartoons, etc...of belly dancers of color for purchase?

Okay, it is vain of me, but I was totally thrilled to find out today that I have been included in the 2007 Men Of Middle Eastern Dance calendar put out by Jim Boz.

where I am sandwiched between Serkan of Belgium and Tarik Sultan from New York.

The calendar is quite international it seems. Me from Canada, Tarik from the States, Amir Thaleb from Argentina, Serkan from Belgium and Jamil from Australia have been included. And that is just in the first six months! :))))

Greetings everyone!!!!

It's been awhile since I've been here and I'm loving reconnecting with all of my old buddies and making new ones.

I was just wondering what plans everyone has for the upcoming New Year. I'm really looking forward to '07 and now I can exhale since we took over the House of Representatives!!!!! (Thank God!!!!!)

Tito in Toronto this weekend AND Layali Arabesque Sat. Oct. 14th & 15th

I'm so excited I could spit! ;-)

The place you want to be this weekend is with famous Egyptian male dancer Tito, as he teaches a heaping helping of workshop action at Estonian House, Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday's workshop will be followed by what I can only describe as a spectacular show featuring Tito, Jim Boz (San Diego), Prince Andrew (Los Angeles), Invoketress (Fergus), Sahara Shimmer (Chicago), Halawa (Guelph), Arabesque Dance Company and more.

Sunday's workshops, including an afternoon Tahtiib (Men's martial stick dance) workshop (women welcome!) will be followed by Layali Arabesque at Gypsy Co-op.

This is your chance to see The Men Of Middle Eastern Dance as Jim Boz and Prince Andrew improvise to live music by the Arabesque band. Having seen both of these men dance, I am humbled by their talent. If you've ever wanted to see what good male bellydancing is about, this would be the weekend to find out. Heck, there are going to be more men dancing this weekend than most of us have seen in a LONG time.

Yasmina Ramzy will also dance to sooth the Arabic men who usually lurk at Layali to watch the girls. ;-)

Come on out! This promises to be more fun than cats and cream!
