I'm so excited I could spit! ;-)
The place you want to be this weekend is with famous Egyptian male dancer Tito, as he teaches a heaping helping of workshop action at Estonian House, Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday's workshop will be followed by what I can only describe as a spectacular show featuring Tito, Jim Boz (San Diego), Prince Andrew (Los Angeles), Invoketress (Fergus), Sahara Shimmer (Chicago), Halawa (Guelph), Arabesque Dance Company and more.
Sunday's workshops, including an afternoon Tahtiib (Men's martial stick dance) workshop (women welcome!) will be followed by Layali Arabesque at Gypsy Co-op.
This is your chance to see The Men Of Middle Eastern Dance as Jim Boz and Prince Andrew improvise to live music by the Arabesque band. Having seen both of these men dance, I am humbled by their talent. If you've ever wanted to see what good male bellydancing is about, this would be the weekend to find out. Heck, there are going to be more men dancing this weekend than most of us have seen in a LONG time.
Yasmina Ramzy will also dance to sooth the Arabic men who usually lurk at Layali to watch the girls. ;-)
Come on out! This promises to be more fun than cats and cream!

When Tito Took Toronto, and other fun...
Wed, October 18, 2006 - 9:22 PMOmigawd it was a wild party from beginning to end! I have not had that much concentrated fun in a long time.
Highlights:
Driving through a freak snowstorm to pick up Prince Andrew in Buffalo.
All the guys who showed up for Tito's workshops: Prince Andrew, Jim Boz, Viraj, Haamid, Norm.
Tito's teaching: Fun, challenging and superb, despite him speaking very little English. I'm sore from all the deep kneebending (my quads hate me right now...) But what a sweet man. I only saw him not smiling once.
Dancing Port Said as part of Arabesque to live band in the Gala show.
The "afterparty" at Christina's, a Greek restaurant near where the Gala was held. We went for dinner after the show and it turned into "Bellydancers Gone Wild" as Me, Jim Boz, Prince Andrew, Norm, and the Ladies from Sahara Shimmer got up on chairs to drunkenly dance after three ouzo shots.
And then we worked the crowd in the restaurant. The manager wouldn't let us sit down because the place was totally rocking. "No, no, one more dance, I put on another song..."
One of the Shimmer girls even got a lap dance from Prince Andrew!!!
Sunday was more Tito, but we were exhausted and they were doing the Melaya Leff dance in the morning so I chilled out. He did more choreography in the afternoon and then the Tahtiib workshop I had been waiting for. Learned a lot there!
That night we went to Layali Arabesque to see Prince Andrew and Jim Boz do their thing with the Arabesque band. The place was packed! And Tito showed up and danced as well, so it was another blast of a night. I was so glad I took Monday off work.
