TO: DANCERS OF ALL GENERES

FROM: RAQUEL A MITCHELL

SUBJECT: THE ONTOLOGY OF DANCE: THE MYTHOLOGICAL, PHILOSOPHICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND SPIRITUAL DIMENSIONS OF BEING AND EXISTING THROUGH MOVEMENT AND DANCE.

DATE: MARCH 13, 2009

Dear dancers of all genres, levels of experience, and walks of life,

My name is Raquel and I am a graduate student of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (Palo Alto, CA), as well as a dancer living on the East Coast. I’ve been dancing since the age of three and have been an active lover of the many forms of Raks Sharqi for over 6 years, and now consider myself to be a Movement Artist(this is due to the integration of my dance and spiritual practice). After my participation in two dance companies (Bellyqueen and Desert Sin), my contact and intimate interaction with the Divine Feminine has led me to a depth of mystery and self discovery, which has given birth to a new perspective on this dance, dance in general, and life/existing/being.

This announcement is being posted because of my ever growing interest in dance as a tool for spiritual growth, human development, and a valid medium for existence and being for those that consider dance to be their life’s blood.

A questionnaire {or a Quest-ionnaire which implies a journey} has been developed based on the essence of the topic idea: Spiritual and Transpersonal Practice of Movement and Dance, and how this is a use for spiritual growth for some, and how it is a driving force of life for others (and my curiosity as to why that is).

The intimate relationship I have developed with ontology and dance is the basis for my thesis project, and this is what motivates me to learn more about the essentials of it.

You are invites to participate in this preliminary questionnaire as part of an ongoing research inquiry.
This questionnaire is to initiate my prospective field of research, stemming from my Master’s study in Transpersonal Psychology into the Doctorate field of study.

There is still much organization and work to be done, as well as integration to tend to. After receiving this preliminary questionnaire from you, I will proceed into a more in-depth series of questions in regards to existence and being through dance and movement, tailored to each dancer that participates.

Please let me know if you would like to participate by emailing me at:

embodiedmover@gmail.com

so that I may attach the survey in my reply to you.

If you would like to decline, please respond with a ‘no’ in this post and a brief response or comment as to why.
Without further ado, I invite you to the transpersonal dance practice of existence and being….

Many Blessings,
~Raquel A. M.

Raquel, your project sounds intriguing, but raises a lot of questions in my mind.

Are you going to study only those people who have made a conscious decision to integrate dance into their spiritual practice, or (for the sake of completeness) are you also going to study those who seek to use dance only for feeling more sexy, getting some exercise, generating an income, or becoming the center of attention?

Are you going to study movement meditations from the Middle East and North Africa such as the Guedra, Mevlevi whirling dervish, zikr, hadra, and zar?

Are you going to look at Christian dancers who use belly dance for liturgical purposes?

Are you going to study the Middle Eastern musical concept of tarab? Or the flamenco duende?

Will you try to find and interview dancers who have experienced a "spiritual moment" while in the midst of doing a more mundane, more "secular" performance such as a restaurant gig?

Sorry to barrage you with so many questions, but "dance as spiritual expression" happens to be an area that interests me too, so I'm always intrigued to learn about what other people are doing to explore it. Based on what you have posted here on this tribe, it's hard for me to tell whether you're planning to pursue a direction that would motivate me to request a questionnaire. Perhaps you could post a follow-up message to this thread providing a few sample questions from your questionnaire to help the rest of us better understand your plans and whether our own situations might fit with what you're looking for?
